Skilled Worker Sponsor Licence Application Guide
A comprehensive legal walkthrough for UK businesses applying to the Home Office for a Skilled Worker Sponsor Licence under Appendix A.
To recruit skilled overseas talent, sponsor international graduates, or transition intra-company personnel, your UK entity must secure an A-rated sponsor licence. The application process requires submitting specified supporting corporate documents within 5 working days of online submission.
The 4 Key Corporate Documents (Appendix A)
Common combinations that satisfy Home Office requirements for established private companies include:
- Document 1: Proof of corporate bank account with a regulated UK bank (showing operating transactions).
- Document 2: Certificate of Employer's Liability Insurance (minimum £5 million cover).
- Document 3: Proof of registration with HMRC as an employer (PAYE and Accounts Office reference letters).
- Document 4: Proof of ownership or lease of commercial business premises, or VAT registration certificate.
Mandatory Key Personnel Roles
When applying, the business must designate named individuals for specific compliance functions on the Sponsorship Management System (SMS):
- Authorising Officer (AO): The most senior person in your organization responsible for the recruitment of non-UK nationals and overall immigration compliance.
- Key Contact: The primary liaison between the Home Office and the sponsor.
- Level 1 User: Responsible for day-to-day administration on the SMS (assigning CoS, reporting worker absences or resignations).
Defined vs. Undefined Certificates of Sponsorship
Once granted an A-rating, your company can assign Certificates of Sponsorship:
- Defined CoS: Required for individuals applying for entry clearance from outside the UK. Must be individually requested and approved by the Home Office prior to assignment.
- Undefined CoS: Allocated annually to sponsor individuals already in the UK who are switching from other eligible visas (such as Graduate or Student status) or extending their Skilled Worker leave.
